What the climate numbers really describe
The month figures on this page come from official climate normals: the Hai Phong station of the Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration, averaged over 1991 to 2020.2 Hai Phong is the city Lan Ha Bay belongs to, and its coast shares the same broad pattern as the cruise waters, even if a day on the bay can feel cooler or windier. Treat them as a guide to the season, not a forecast for your dates, and check the local forecast in the week before you sail.
One detail matters when you read the rain figures. The agency counts a rain day from as little as 0.1 mm of precipitation, a passing drizzle included.2 A month with many rain days but a small total, like March with 19 days and 54 mm, is a month of mist and fine drizzle rather than downpours.2 The totals tell you more about how wet a day on deck will feel. Look at both columns together before you judge a month, and remember that a short shower on a cruise rarely stops anything for long.
Put the numbers next to the tourism authority's own advice and a clear picture appears. The best time to visit Ha Long Bay by cruise, by its account, is September to November, with clear, calm days in autumn and spring and a chance of storms in summer.1 It describes hot, humid summers and cool, drier winters with a light mist over the bay.3 The rest of this page walks through the year season by season, with the rules and the prices that change along with the weather.

Autumn: the months the experts point to
September still belongs partly to summer. Its average high is 31.1 °C and it brings 251 mm of rain over 14 rain days.2 The water is warm for swimming and kayaking, but it is still a wet month, and a spare day in your plans helps if heavy rain sets in. Pack a rain shell next to your swimwear, and plan the most important activity of the trip for the morning, when the air is fresher.
October is where the numbers turn in your favor. Rain falls on 9 days on average and the month total drops to 88 mm, while the average high is still 29.5 °C.2 A Ha Long Bay cruise in October combines warm swims off the boat with calmer, drier days, and it falls inside the window the tourism authority recommends.1 Kayaking among the lagoons is comfortable at this time of year, and you can sit out on the deck after dinner without a jacket.
November is drier again: 7 rain days, 45 mm of rain, and highs of 26.3 °C.2 Evenings on deck turn pleasant rather than sticky. The tourism site also notes that autumn and winter bring an atmospheric fog to the region.4 A morning shrouded in mist is part of the bay's character, and it often lifts by the time you reach the first cave. Bring a light sweater for the evening and the early tai chi on deck, and keep your camera ready for the first clear spell of the day.

While autumn and winter bring a haunting, atmospheric fog to the region, summer delivers crisp visibility, dramatic skies, and beautifully warm nights.
Winter: mist, cool air and the driest weeks
December ties with November for the fewest rain days, 7, and adds only 25 mm of rain.2 Highs average 22.3 °C and lows 15.7 °C, a world away from summer.2 A Ha Long Bay cruise in December suits travelers who prefer a jacket on the evening deck to sweating through a cave visit. Swimming is for the brave; for kayaking, long sleeves make sense. Cabins with a bathtub and a hot shower come into their own on a cool evening after a day of sightseeing.
January and February are the coolest months. January averages a high of 20 °C and a low of 14.6 °C; February brings 13 rain days but only 21 mm, the light drizzle that hangs in the air.2 Pack layers, a windproof top and something warm to sleep in, as cabins and decks feel different from the city streets. The mist also gives the bay a quieter, softer look that suits black-and-white photos.
Winter also brings surcharges. The booked cruise charges extra at New Year, Christmas and national holidays. Another balcony cruise lists a holiday surcharge of $40 per person on December 24, December 31 and Lunar New Year. Peak-season surcharges run from October 1 to April 30 on several listings, for example $20 per person on the 3-day Ha Long and Bai Tu Long cruise. Book early if your dates fall on one of these holidays, and read the surcharge lines before you compare totals.

Spring: a gentle warm-up
March is the misty month in the numbers: 19 rain days but only 54 mm of rain, with highs of 22.8 °C.2 Expect soft, gray light more often than blue skies. Photographers who like layered silhouettes of karst islands fading into haze can find this season rewarding; sun seekers should look later in the year. It is a calm season for an overnight trip if you do not mind cooler water and a jacket in the evening.
April warms up quickly, with an average high of 26.9 °C, 14 rain days and 61 mm of rain.2 The tourism authority counts spring among the seasons with clear, calm days for cruising.1 Water and air are pleasant for kayaking, and the big summer rains have not started yet, which makes April a good choice if autumn does not fit your trip. Book a little ahead for April if your dates are fixed and you want a particular cabin.
Note that the peak-season surcharges of several cruises still apply until April 30. The 5-star Ha Long and Bai Tu Long cruise from Hanoi or Ninh Binh, for example, adds $13 per person in that period, and the 3-day cruise with private balcony adds $20. Check the dates against your booking before you compare prices. From May onward these extras fall away on the listings named here, while holiday surcharges keep their own dates.
Summer: heat, heavy rain and storm days
May jumps to 202 mm of rain and an average high of 30.7 °C.2 June is the hottest month on average, at 32.5 °C, and July brings 267 mm over 16 rain days.2 August is the wettest month of the year, with 361 mm of rain over 18 rain days.2 Drink plenty of water, plan the cave visits for the cooler hours, and choose a cabin with air conditioning, which the booked cruise includes. The cooling sea breeze on deck helps more in the evening than in the middle of the day.
The tourism authority mentions the chance of storms in summer, and the rules show what that means in practice.1 When Storm Wutip approached on June 13, 2025, overnight boats in Ha Long Bay were suspended and tourist boats had to be back on shore before 6 pm.5 Book a cruise with free cancellation and keep a buffer day in Hanoi if you travel in these months. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, and make sure your travel insurance covers weather delays.
Summer also has its fans. The tourism site praises its crisp visibility, dramatic skies and warm nights.4 It is also the busy season: Ti Top Beach is busiest in the peak summer months, and the seller of a day cruise with 13,162 reviews warns of crowds from June to August and at weekends.6 An overnight cruise lets you see the popular stops early or late. A sunrise start on deck, followed by a cave before the day boats arrive, is a good way to beat the heat and the crowds at once.
Hours of light and boat timetables
Day length changes only modestly over the year, but it still shapes your evenings. In mid-December the sun stays above the horizon for 10.9 hours, in mid-June for 13.4 hours.2 That is time from sunrise to sunset, not hours of sunshine; clouds decide how much of it you actually see. For a sunset on deck, check what time the sun goes down during your stay and ask the crew where the boat will anchor for the night.
The authorities also set the hours boats may sail in Ha Long Bay. In summer, from April 1 to October 31, tourist boats may leave port from 5:00 am and must be back by 8 pm; in winter they may leave from 5:30 am and must return by 7 pm.7 Overnight boats come under the same authorities, and they were suspended when Storm Wutip approached in 2025.5 On a day cruise, ask the seller what time the boat returns to port.
For most travelers the choice comes down to priorities. Choose October or November for the best balance of warmth and dry weather, December to February for cool air and the lowest rain totals, and summer for warm water and clear evenings, with the storm risk taken into account.21 Whatever the month, reserve with free cancellation and watch the forecast in the days before you go. A night on the water is rewarding in every season; the calendar only decides what you pack and what you pay.
