Lan Ha Bay vs Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long: which bay to cruise
Lan Ha Bay sits off Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong, Ha Long Bay lies in Quang Ninh, and Bai Tu Long stretches further northeast. They share one karst seascape, but a cruise feels different in each.

One seascape, split between a province and a city
Lan Ha Bay is the name you keep seeing on cruise listings that also say Ha Long. They are neighbors in a single World Heritage property that UNESCO lists as Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago, with 1,133 islands and islets across Quang Ninh province and Hai Phong city.1 Ha Long Bay belongs to Quang Ninh, while Lan Ha Bay lies off Cat Ba Island and belongs to Hai Phong.
The split is more than a line on a map. Ha Long Bay is run by the Ha Long Bay Management Board, while the Cat Ba Archipelago falls under Cat Ba National Park and the Management Board of Cat Ba Bays.6 Each side sets its own visitor routes and tickets, and a cruise that crosses from one to the other passes between them without much ceremony.
The heritage listing came in steps. Ha Long Bay was first recognized as a World Heritage site in 1994 and 2000, and the Cat Ba Archipelago was added in 2023.7 The decision to join them was taken at the World Heritage Committee's 45th session on September 16, 2023.8 For a cruise passenger it means the Lan Ha side now carries the same protected status as the famous one.
What makes the Lan Ha side look different
Cat Ba Island is the largest island in the Cat Ba Archipelago, and Lan Ha Bay wraps around its eastern and southeastern shore.92 Hundreds of smaller islands in the bay form, together with neighboring Ha Long Bay, one continuous coastal karst landscape.10 From a deck you rarely notice where one bay ends and the next begins.
Up close, UNESCO describes the Cat Ba side as vegetated islands, marine lakes and limestone towers with sheer cliffs dropping into the sea.11 The larger offshore islands reach 150 to 170 meters, while smaller islets rise to about 100 meters.12 It is a vertical, enclosed landscape, with narrow passages that open into quiet pools of green water.
That shape suits small boats and paddles. Vietnam's tourism authority points kayakers to Lan Ha for its pristine lagoons and empty beaches.13 The interior of Cat Ba is also the only home of the Cat Ba langur, a critically endangered primate, so keep your voice down near the forested cliffs and you may hear more than you see.14

Ha Long Bay: the caves and the classic stops
Ha Long Bay has the sights most people picture first. Its visitor routes are numbered, and route 2, the cave park, covers Soi Sim beach, Ti Top island and a string of caves including Sung Sot, Me Cung, Bo Nau, Luon, Trong and Trinh Nu.3 When a listing names these places, you can be sure it spends real time in Ha Long Bay itself.
Sung Sot is the headline cave: the largest discovered in Ha Long Bay so far, sitting 20 meters above sea level at the top of a steep, shaded path.15 Ti Top island carries a story of its own. It is the only island in the bay named by President Ho Chi Minh, after his 1962 visit with Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov.16
The flip side is company. UNESCO lists rising visitor numbers and tourism development as a continuing management challenge for the property.17 The Management Board describes Ti Top Beach as one of the most visited places in the bay, busiest in the peak summer season.18 Expect other boats at these stops and plan your expectations around shared views.

Ha Long Bay VS Lan Ha Bay - Which Should You Choose?

Bai Tu Long: further out and calmer
If solitude is the goal, Vietnam's tourism authority suggests skipping the main bay for Bai Tu Long, just to the northeast.4 It describes the karsts there as slightly smaller than those of Ha Long and Lan Ha, with wide, unspoiled views of sea and sky.5 Think of it as the same palette painted with a lighter hand.
Fewer cruises sail there, and the listings say so in their names. A 2-day 5-star cruise pairs Halong with Bai Tu Long, starting from Hanoi or Ninh Binh, from $155 and rated 4.83 from 244 reviews. A longer 3-day stay lists Vung Vieng and Cong Do among its stops, from $291.
The trade is simple to describe. You give up Sung Sot and Ti Top, which many travelers count as the core of a first visit, and gain a quieter horizon. If you have already seen the cave park, or if you are back for a second trip, Bai Tu Long makes a fresh choice rather than a lesser one.
How the listings mix the bays
Most overnight listings do not stay in one bay. The tourism authority notes that premium operators now chart courses through Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long for a fraction of the boat traffic in the main bay.22 A typical program starts from the Ha Long side and spends its second morning around Cat Ba.
The booked cruise follows that pattern. Its title names both Ha Long and Lan Ha, and its day 2 offers either Trung Trang Cave or Quan Y Cave on Cat Ba Island, or kayaking and swimming in the Ao Ech area of Lan Ha Bay, before brunch on the way back to Tuan Chau Marina. It costs from $135 with a balcony cabin and a bathtub.
Some listings start on Cat Ba instead. The 2-day Lan Ha Bay cruise with meals and activities is filed under Cat Ba Island and keeps groups to 15, from $123. Read the start point closely: a cruise that begins on Cat Ba may leave the ride from Hanoi to you, and the Ha Long Bay vs Lan Ha Bay cruise choice then also becomes a choice of harbor.
Choosing your bay in practice
For a first cruise with one night, a mixed route gives you a little of everything: the Ha Long side on the way out and the Lan Ha lagoons on the second morning. That is the shape of the booked cruise, and of its sister listing, which offers kayaking in Ao Ech or a visit to Quan Y Cave on Cat Ba Island.
If caves and famous viewpoints top your list, choose a program that names Sung Sot, Luon or Ti Top. A day cruise that stops at all three can be added on another day, from $41. If paddling matters most, a route through Lan Ha gives the lagoons the tourism authority recommends for kayaks.13
And if you want the quietest water, look at Bai Tu Long programs, accepting a smaller choice of boats and dates. Whichever bay you pick, the rules on board are the same: no waste over the side, and boats booked through the official ports rather than from touts on the street.2324 The scenery is shared; only the crowds and the stops change.
What stays the same whichever water you choose
Some things do not change when you cross from Quang Ninh into Hai Phong waters. The rock is the same limestone, the boats look much alike, and the rhythm of an overnight trip follows a familiar pattern: an afternoon of cruising, a quiet evening at anchor, an early start on deck and a slow return toward the harbor. The bays differ in detail, not in kind. Pack for that rhythm, not for a particular bay.
The weather is shared too. Mornings can bring a soft haze that flattens the islands into grey silhouettes, and clear afternoons turn the water a deep green. Neither bay can promise one or the other on a given date, and a route that suits calm water may be shortened when the wind picks up. Treat the itinerary as a plan rather than a guarantee. Your crew will make the call on the day.
Most of all, the care asked of visitors is the same everywhere in the property. Leave caves as you found them, keep plastic and food scraps on board, and give fishing boats and farms a wide berth when you paddle. The karst has taken a very long time to form, and the people who live and work among the islands share it with every cruise that passes through. A little restraint keeps it that way.
