How long the drive from Hanoi takes

Ha Long Bay sits on the coast east of the capital, and the road is the only practical way there for a cruise. Vietnam's tourism authority gives about two and a half hours by road on the expressway, with cruise transfers running to Tuan Chau and Bai Chay ports.1 Another of its pages says new roads bring the journey from Hanoi under two hours.2 The honest answer sits between the two and depends on traffic and where in the city you start.

Transfer listings give similar numbers. The limousine bus to and from the bay is listed at 2.5 hours, and the private car at 2 to 2.5 hours. The premium daily limousine service lists 2 hours. Treat these as time on the road; a shared bus also spends time collecting other guests at their hotels before it leaves the city.

Plan your arrival day around that. If you land at the airport on the morning of your cruise, a private transfer from the airport to Ha Long notes that the trip takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours, depending on traffic, weather and time of day. That is a long day after a flight, and many travelers prefer a night in Hanoi first and an unhurried start.

Hanoi to Ha Long Bay distance, and what it means for you

People often ask about the Hanoi to Ha Long Bay distance in kilometers, but the official sources describe the trip in hours, not distance. The most useful figure for a cruise is the drive time above. For the Lan Ha side there is a distance on record: Cat Ba National Park lies about 150 km southeast of Hanoi and about 25 km south of Ha Long city.4

That second number matters for cruises that start on the Ha Long side and spend their second morning in Lan Ha Bay. The boat covers the stretch south toward Cat Ba while you sleep or eat, and you never have to make the longer road trip around to the island. The booked cruise works this way, returning to Tuan Chau Marina over brunch on day 2.

If you are heading to Cat Ba itself, for a cruise that starts on the island, the ride is longer. The transportation listing between Hanoi and Cat Ba runs from 3.5 hours up to a full day, depending on the option, from $12. Check the starting point of your cruise before you book a bus, since Tuan Chau and Cat Ba are not the same trip.

The Ha Long Bay cruise port: Tuan Chau and Bai Chay

The tourism authority names two harbors for cruise transfers, Tuan Chau and Bai Chay.1 Tuan Chau International Marina is where the Management Board starts route 2, the cave park with Ti Top and Sung Sot.3 The other Ha Long Bay cruise port, at Bai Chay, is the Ha Long International Passenger Port, closer to the city itself.

Distances out into the bay differ a little depending on where you start. The floating area of Vung Vieng, for example, lies about 20 km from Tuan Chau International Marina and 16 km from the Ha Long International Passenger Port.5 On a package cruise you do not choose the harbor yourself; the operator does. The booked cruise names Tuan Chau Marina as the harbor it returns to.

At the port, the Management Board gives one piece of practical advice worth repeating: do not hire boats from touts outside the passenger port.6 If you arrive independently, walk inside to the ticket and information counters rather than accepting an offer on the street. With a booked cruise, your guide or the crew meets you, and none of this arises.

Pickup times and the day on the road

The booked cruise shows pickup at 8:00 AM in Hanoi Old Quarter and 7:00 AM in Ninh Binh. Those are collection times at your hotel or meeting point, not the moment the boat sails. The seller sends a final reconfirmation with pickup details 24 hours before departure. Keep your phone charged and check messages the evening before.

On the way back, drop-off is around 3:00 PM in Hanoi Old Quarter and around 4:00 PM in Ninh Binh. That leaves an evening in the city, or time to catch an overnight train or a late flight if you plan with a buffer. Traffic on the return can be heavier than on the way out, so avoid booking anything tight.

City rules shape the timing too. The most booked day-cruise listing warns that from July 1, 2026, buses with more than 16 seats may not pick up in Hanoi Old Quarter between 6:00 and 9:00 AM, nor drop off between 4:00 and 7:30 PM. If your hotel sits inside that zone, expect a short walk to a nearby pickup point rather than a stop at the door.

Included, extra or on your own

Read the transfer line of a listing before you compare prices. The booked cruise carries a pickup label, yet its exclusions list the round-trip transfer from Hanoi or Ninh Binh at $25 per person. Ask the seller which applies to your option. Its sister listing is clearer: transportation is not included in any booking option, and shared round-trip transfers are optional.

Other sellers price the shuttle the same way. The Elite cruise lists a round-trip shuttle bus from Hanoi Old Quarter at $25 per person. A Lan Ha cruise with a balcony boat sells the bus between Hanoi and the harbor at $12 each way. The amounts are small next to the cruise, but they add up for a family.

Booking a transfer yourself is easy too. The limousine bus to and from the bay costs from $16 and is rated 4.83. A private car for your group starts from $72, rated 4.84. The limousine listing adds airport drop-off for $20 per booking, for up to 5 passengers, a handy option if you fly out after the cruise.

Which way to travel suits your trip

If you want the least planning, take the shuttle your cruise seller offers and confirm its price and pickup point in writing. You share the bus with other guests heading to the same boat, the timing is set around the cruise, and you hand the question of harbors and parking to someone else. It is the simplest way to arrive on time when you have only one or two days to spare for the bay.

If you travel as a group of four or more, compare the shuttle with a private car. The private car listing quotes 2 to 2.5 hours and starts from $72, rated 4.84. Use the calculator below to compare the totals for your group, and weigh them against the freedom to stop when you like and leave from your own hotel at an hour that suits you.

If you start in Ninh Binh rather than Hanoi, look for a cruise with a Ninh Binh pickup. The booked cruise collects there at 7:00 AM and drops off there around 4:00 PM. Combining the karst valleys inland with the karst islands at sea is a natural pairing, and a cruise that handles the link saves you a day of logistics.

Small things that make the road trip easier

Pack the night's bag separately from your main luggage. A cruise cabin has less room than a hotel, and a small duffel with swimwear, a change of clothes, sunscreen and a light layer for the evening deck is all most guests open. If you continue elsewhere after the cruise, ask your hotel in Hanoi whether it will hold the rest of your luggage until you return.

Eat something before pickup and carry water for the bus. The ride is long enough to want a snack, and rest stops along the expressway vary in what they offer. Motion on a coach is mild, but if you are prone to travel sickness, take what usually helps you before you set off rather than once the road starts to wind toward the coast.

Keep your passport within reach rather than buried in a suitcase. Cruise operators register guests before boarding, and the booked cruise asks for a valid passport on the day of travel, as do several others on this site. Having it ready at the marina keeps the check-in short and lets you get out onto the deck while the boat is still in harbor.

Plan your night
